New measures for the exports of plastic waste to third countries

The EU's awareness of the responsibility for the waste generated and reaching the goals of the so-called European Green Deal are two main factors that have motivated the imposition of new measures that aim to stop the international trade in waste produced in recent years.

  • The European Commission approves regulations for the export, import and intra-community transport that prohibits the transfer of plastic waste from EU countries to non-OECD countries. Non-hazardous plastic waste has been left out of this standard.
  • Following the previous point, OECD countries must have permission from destination countries before sending hazardous plastic waste.

The main reason for this decision also refers to the low capacity to manage this type of waste and that, in addition, it is carried out in an unsustainable way.
